Port deck masking

Before we could put any hardware on the decks, we had to finish painting the top of the boat. To protect the bottom of the boat from overspray, we masked the whole boat in plastic, from the deck shear line down. We then sprayed all the white areas and let it cure.

Now we had to mask off the areas that would have hardware and then spray the nonskid. I must have looked at 10 different ways of applying nonskid, and that many different materials. There was sand, walnut shells, rubber granules, on and on.

I elected to go with Awl Grip plastic spheres. I am not sure of the name of them, but you mix them with the paint and spray like normal. The spheres are so small; they do not interfere with the spray gun. Once they have been applied, they start to absorb the paint and expand.

Since they become the same color as the paint, if any break or chip out, it does not leave a black mark on your deck. By spraying with the paint, you get very even coverage.

I found the decks very safe in normal conditions. If you have frost or snow on board, I am afraid this stuff is not coarse enough to stop you from slipping, but then anything that would, would look horrible in normal conditions.
